Industry – Training The Challenge – to strengthen the educational materials and quality of ethical hacking training for students. The solution – the SAINT integrated vulnerability scanner and penetration testing tools. "Not only do we use SAINT to instruct our students in vulnerability scanning and penetration testing, SAINT also helps us demonstrate how real networks are exploited by hackers. It is imperative to understand the bad guys' techniques." Enhancing the Academy's security training curriculum was the first objective in Aaron Cohen's list of action items for 2008. The private security training company, headquartered in Chicago, is growing rapidly, so ensuring the quality of the security tools for their labs was critical for hands-on knowledge and certification of their students. The academy's goal was to widen its hands-on training above and beyond the certifications and curriculum, says Cohen. "That's why we looked for a third party solution that identifies and exploits vulnerabilities." Cohen evaluated three vendors and chose the SAINT® scanner and its integrated SAINTexploit™ penetration testing tool. Cohen says the program had initially used open source tools, but found that the exploits and vulnerability checks were not realiable and consumed too much time during their training classes. "SAINT has provided us the accuracy and support we were looking for; in addition, this frees up more time to focus on other training components." "Now that we haved saved time with our lab component, we can provide our students additional knowledge. In fact, with the extra time, we have begun using the SAINT reports to provide education on compliance initiatives such as PCI, GLBA, FISMA, etc." Cohen says that SAINT's integration of penetration testing and vulnerability assessment saves time and will be a quick return on investment for all security auditors.
